A Korean car maker, Hyundai pulled its spot commercial titled "Restless" after the Advertising Standards Bureau(ASB) of Australia banned it. As you see, this ad shows a baby snatching the keys to a car and riding it. Along the way, he picks up a girl who happens to be hitching to the beach. He surfs and she watches.
What adorable toddlers and how creative the ad is. However, ASB argues that the ad shows illegal activity and may entice youngsters into copycat behavior.
What?
As you have already experienced, kids love to pretend that they are adults. But they are not as stupid as those adults think. They know they are pretending.
Not to mention, kids’ cautiousness, even if a kid did copy that behavior he wouldn't be able to reach the pedals. And she wouldn't be able to write "west coast" on the cardboard. Moreover, is there nothing else on TV that shows illegal stuff?
Another good example showing how creativity is being killed by stubborn adults.
During the last Thanksgiving holidays(2006), our family went to Washington DC and spent a lot of time in museums. Luke was so excited (sometimes scared) to see various artworks.
At the first encounter with this Pablo Picasso's artwork in National Gallery of Art, he shouted, "Mama" and "Chi Chi." As you know, mama is a baby word for mother and "Chi chi" is a Korean baby word meaning nipples of woman. I don't know if he felt a kind of mother´s warm breast by seeing the sculpture but it is certain that he recognized the simplified (so difficult to recognize) figure as a woman. I think he might have felt some sympathy with Pablo Picasso which I could not feel. Interestingly, after his remark, I could also see a mother and the mother´s warm breast in the statue.
Perhaps criticising art at the level of kid's eyes may give us more fruitful enjoyment of art.
Blue Yellow and White (2006) by Luke Chang, watercolor on paper.
He might have thought...
"I used colors of blue, yellow and white. But where's the yellow? Where that green came from?"
Untitled #1 (2006) by Luke Chang, Watercolor on paper.
He only used 2 colors but it seems extremely colorful, which reminds me that the recognition of colorfulness is not from the number of colors. Rather it is from the physical movement taken in the work.
Here are two pieces of Decalcomanie created by Luke.
What is decalcomanie?
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary says as follows.
Decalcomania \De*cal`co*ma"ni*a\, Decalcomanie\De*cal`co*ma"nie\, n. [F. d['e]calcomanie.] The art or process of transferring pictures and designs to china, glass, marble, etc., and permanently fixing them thereto.
According to Jan Thor(http://www.janthor.de/briefsCollage/index.html) a decalcomanie is made the following way: Take a piece of paper (or a canvas). Cover it generously with oil paint (at least two different colors) and terpentine. Cover the whole with a second piece of paper. Press the second piece of paper against the first. Seperate both papers.
With these two pieces in mind, please appreciate the next piece of artwork.
This artwork is Decalcomanie by Georges Hugnet (1904-1974) and you can buy this artwork at the price of $2,754 via http://www.artprice.com
So I feel like I earned more than $5,000 just by enjoying my son's creativity.
Untitled #2 (2006) by Luke Chang, Watercolor on white paper.
One of the early terms that Luke has been using is "Dal." Dal means moon in Korean. It was interesting to see that he recognized moon very quickly whenever he looked up even in the daylight. As you know, you can see white moon in the morning sometimes.
It seems certain that he has a unique feeling or notion about moon.
By the way, this piece of artwork always remind me of a restful night with a hazy moon, and makes me want to drink and be hazy.
Different Texture of Red (2006), Collage with magazine, linen, flower and pasta on black paper.
Collage (From the French: coller, to stick) is regarded as a work of visual arts made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. This technique made its first appearance in the early 20th century as a groundbreaking novelty, but with the passing of time it has become ubiquitous.
For example, an artistic collage work may include newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made papers, photographs, etc., glued to a solid support or canvas.
Its adoption has crossed the boundaries of visual arts. In music, with the advances on recording technology, avant-garde artists started experimenting with cutting and pasting since the middle of the 20th century. However in the 1990s and 2000s it is completely apparent that "musical collages" have already become the norm for popular music, especially on rap, hip hop (rap-pop) and electronic music.
